Michael Farris is a constitutional appellate litigator who has served as lead counsel in the United States Supreme Court, eight federal circuit courts, and the appellate courts of thirteen states. He has been a leader on Capitol Hill for over thirty years and is widely known for his leadership on homeschooling, religious freedom, and the preservation of American sovereignty.

Farris is the Chancellor of Patrick Henry College and Chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association. He was the founding president of each organization.

At Patrick Henry College, Farris teaches constitutional law, public international law, and coaches PHC’s Moot Court team, which has won eight national championships.

A prolific author, Farris has been recognized with a number of awards including the Salvatori Prize for American Citizenship by the Heritage Foundation and as one of the “Top 100 Faces in Education for the 20th Century” by Education Week magazine.

Description: In Constitutional Law with Michael Farris, students learn about the foundations of the U.S. Constitution as well as study pivotal Supreme Court decisions affecting religious freedom, abortion, free speech, and judicial review.

All students enrolled in Section 1 of Constitutional Law may attend either the 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) or the 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) live class session. Each week, students may choose their preferred class time at their own convenience.

  • What topics will I learn about in Constitutional Law?

    Constitutional Law with Michael Farris is the study of pivotal Supreme Court cases. In Constitutional Law, students will learn to understand our nation's founding documents, explore precedent-setting Supreme Court cases, and tackle difficult questions about what the Founding Fathers really intended. Students will also build a foundation for evaluating future judicial decisions based on Supreme Court precedent. 

  • Am I ready to take Constitutional Law?

    Constitutional Law with Michael Farris is a high school level course. Before enrolling, students should have a basic understanding of the American political system. In addition to rudimentary knowledge of the American government, students should also have good reading skills. 

    HSLDA Online Academy recommends that students should be entering 10th grade or higher before enrolling in Constitutional Law with Michael Farris. Adults are welcome to enroll in Constitutional Law at any age. 

  • What is a Live Online Class Session in Constitutional Law?

    In Constitutional Law, students will participate in internet chat sessions hosted by Michael Farris every one to two weeks. 

    Scheduled real-time sessions in the online classroom are not the only form of instruction available in a HSLDA Online Academy course, but are offered in addition to lectures or other instructional materials that students are able to access online at their convenience.

    When they register, students will be placed in one section of Constitutional Law and will have the option to attend either live class time at their own convenience. Registered students will be notified of any changes to the live session schedule. HSLDA Online Academy reserves the right to cancel one live class session time. 

  • What if I have a schedule conflict with listed Constitutional Law class times?

    All live class sessions are recorded for later viewing. While it is recommended that students attend each live class session, students can make arrangements to watch the recordings and receive full participation credit.

    Students should contact their instructor at the start of their course to inform the instructor of any foreseen schedule conflicts.
