Chemistry (w/ lab)

In this course students learn about the properties and behavior of the matter that surrounds them. Chemistry identifies the ingredients of our physical world, studies how they interact on a molecular level, and observes the results of these interactions. This course is NCAA-approved.

Overview

Course Description

Chemistry introduces students to the foundational theories, facts, and techniques of this scientific discipline, ranging from atomic structure to chemical thermodynamics and kinetics. Lab experiments challenge students to apply their knowledge to real-world situations and engage in qualitative and quantitative observations. Through the study of chemistry, students encounter the glory of God in his creation and discover how this knowledge can be used to serve his people.

Prerequisites

Students should have completed Algebra 1 before taking Chemistry. Prior lab experience is not necessary.

Students Will Learn

How to interpret the periodic table of elements
How to distinguish various types of chemical bonds
How to identify and predict the outcomes and energy changes of chemical reactions
How to perform stoichiometric calculations
How to interpret oxidation and reduction reactions
How to make accurate and precise measurements

Live Class Sections

Don't worry if none of the live times work for you! You can still register for a section and watch the recordings of the live classes at your convenience.

Chemistry (w/ lab) is a yearlong course. Registration opens in late February.

What to Expect Weekly

We estimate that the course workload will take 7–10 hours per week. During a typical week, students will complete the following:

90 minutes of live class instruction
One to three recorded lectures
4–12 pages of textbook reading
A quiz or homework assignment
A practical lab exercise or online discussion post

Students complete 12 tests and various homework assignments.
