Elissa LuceroClassroom Teacher

BA, John Brown University
MSc, University of Glasgow

Elissa Lucero grew up in Greenwood, Arkansas. She received a homeschool education and views it as formative to her independent thought and love for reading. During high school, Elissa took four AP classes from HSLDA Online Academy. Today, she enjoys teaching homeschool students who share her excitement for excellent Christian education in preparation for college. This is her second year teaching English 3: American Literature for the Academy

At John Brown University, Elissa graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a minor in English. She also delved into theology, politics, and women in American history. During her undergraduate career, Elissa studied abroad at Oxford University. She focused on women in early modern England, the socio-economic effects of Victorian housing crises, and the creative writing of C.S. Lewis.

Elissa is passionate about fostering student interest in literature and helping learners to pursue challenging questions and creative ideas. Her educational philosophy centers on an imaginative classroom space and includes disconcerting questions, creative assessments, intergroup dialogue, and peer learning. She gets excited about the details of grammar and punctuation and is determined to help others enjoy well-written sentences. Her pedagogy has been informed by years of teaching piano, tutoring for the ACT, working for nonprofit education organizations, co-teaching with professors in undergraduate courses, and delivering programs in Scottish high-schools.

Together with her husband, who studies Theology, Elissa just moved back from Scotland. She completed a Master's in Gender History at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on female writing and women in North American religious history. While in Scotland, they also got the chance to explore castles, beaches, and sheep!
