John Luvera earned his Bachelor's degree in Engineering Physics, with a concentration in optics and lasers from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. He then went on to earn an MS in Optical Science and Engineering from the University of Central Florida CREOL in Orlando, Florida. John's master's thesis was in the field of laser communication and optical turbulence.

After a few years working in the optics and I.T. fields, John pursued a career in education and was certified in the state of New Jersey. John taught calculus-based and algebra-based physics, and robotics engineering for 10 years in a public high school before entering civil service. While a civilian, John has continued his passion for STEM education as a robotics mentor and coach as well as tutoring his own children in math and science classes. Throughout his career, John has developed an appreciation for understanding fundamental concepts, especially in math and science, and applying them to new situations.

John's interests beyond teaching include homesteading, blacksmithing, and outdoor recreation.
