Teacher Feature: Mr. Christopher VanOosterhout, Technology

Welcome to the "Teacher Feature"! In this series, we ask Academy instructors the same five, fun questions so that you can get to know them better. Today, we are excited to highlight technology instructor, Christopher VanOosterhout.

Christopher VanOosterhout is a technology professional with over 20 years of teaching experience. He is also an eBusiness strategist who has worked with non-profits, local small businesses, and multi-billion dollar corporations alike. Christopher lives along the Lake Michigan shoreline with his wife and their four homeschooled boys on a hobby farm. In his free time, he advocates for responsible data stewardship.

HSLDA Online Academy: What’s a typical Saturday night like for you?

Christopher VanOosterhout: Spending time with family and friends on our farm and hosting our church life group once per month on Saturday evening.

HSLDA Online Academy: What are your must-have smartphone apps?

Christopher VanOosterhout: Email…I am trying actively to reduce my smartphone usage but unfortunately ProtonMail and Outlook are still important and highly used applications for me.

HSLDA Online Academy: What can you cook to perfection? Are you willing to share the recipe?

Christopher VanOosterhout: Grilled cheese sandwich:

  • 2 slices of bread (preferably not the heel pieces, unless you’re into that sort of thing)
  • 2–3 slices extra sharp cheddar (sharp enough to have an opinion on politics)
  • 2–3 slices pepper jack cheese (for that rebellious, “I put hot sauce on everything” energy)
  • Butter (enough to make cardiologists sigh…although if I don’t have butter, I will use whatever)
  • Optional: tomato soup, because I want to be a bit traditional even if my choice of cheese makes me seem like a rebel.

HSLDA Online Academy: If you won the lottery and decided to give up teaching, what would you do instead?

Christopher VanOosterhout: Spend more time on our farm, start a larger greenhouse operation, build a pond, spend more time with the ministry non-profits I am most passionate about, do more to promote the homeschool movement, and become more involved in local government. Finally, I would work to eliminate the lottery as a predatory product (in this scenario a bit of hypocrisy there…😊 )

HSLDA Online Academy: If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

Christopher VanOosterhout: Stay God-focused in all you do.
