Critical Thinking is an easy-to-read, engaging textbook. It contains hundreds of practice exercises and offers many online resources. Though it is marketed as a college text, it is well within the reading range of most high school students. Students learn about the structures of reasoning—how to clarify and understand what others say and further identify good and bad types of reasoning. In a balanced way, the textbook teaches both the formal (more mathematical) and the informal (more rhetorical) aspects of logic and critical thinking. By teaching both the logical norms of good reasoning and aspects of critical thinking which build off good logic, the text provides a well-rounded, practical introduction to the subject.

Disclaimer

This book applies critical thinking skills to current political and cultural issues. The text and homework sets often broach topics such as gun control, abortion, legalizing drugs, gay marriage, etc. by providing reasoning on both sides of the issues. While the authors generally do a good job remaining balanced and presenting both good and flawed reasoning from opposing viewpoints, they sometimes take positions with which readers may not agree. In our class discussions, we will do our best to cover all such topics in a respectful, student-friendly manner, and from a biblical perspective.
