Spanish 1
Overview
Course Description
Spanish 1 emphasizes verbal skills as a pedagogical method. Students begin speaking Spanish right away, which helps them remain engaged while studying the more technical aspects of language instruction. Live classes are delivered in both English and Spanish. Students learn to discuss their activities, basic needs and wants, and other everyday topics in Spanish. Special focus is given to language used to worship Jesus so students can share the gospel in Spanish. They also learn how to read Bible verses and listen to Christian worship songs in Spanish.
Prerequisites
No previous Spanish or foreign language experience is necessary. Students should be able to read and write at the 9th grade level. We offer a Spanish Placement Assessment to help families determine where students fit in the Academy Spanish program. The ultimate decision rests with parents.
Students Will Learn
- How to communicate orally in common social situations
- How to understand Spanish pronunciation, accentuation, grammar, and spelling
- How to understand important patterns of verb formation, both regular and irregular, in the past, present, and future tenses
- How to understand the differences between conditional, imperative, and subjunctive moods in Spanish
- How to understand simple texts in Spanish
- How to fulfill basic writing needs in Spanish
- How to become accustomed to speaking with native Spanish speakers
- How to understand Hispanic culture

Live Class Sections
Spanish 1 is a yearlong course. Registration opens in late February.
What to Expect Weekly
We estimate that the course workload will take 5–7 hours per week. During a typical week in this course, students will complete the following coursework:
- 90 minutes of live class instruction
- “Language Lesson” recordings with guides and online flashcards
- Several short quizzes or homework exercises
- Discussion forum posts
- Bible memory verses in Spanish
- Short worship songs in Spanish
Throughout the year, students complete eight portfolio projects and a test every four weeks.
