September is the official start of fall. Depending on where you live in the United States, it might feel too warm to break out the flannel and boots or you might have already seen snow. But regardless, there’s something special about acknowledging the shifting seasons!
There are fall bucket lists all over the internet, so rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel, we’ve collected some favorite fall activities to inspire you to pause and enjoy autumn before the holiday rush hits.
For exploring:
- A fall hike
- Go on a fall foliage road trip (New England is an excellent option.)
- Go horseback riding
- Take a group apple picking
- Go to a corn maze after dark (take flashlights!)
- Splurge on a scenic train ride
- Go camping – even if it is only in the backyard
- Find a local pumpkin patch
For fostering community:
- Host a fall dinner outside! (This article has some great tips.)
- Rake leaves – not just your own, but the neighbor’s, too (and then jump into the leaf piles!)
- Attend a sporting event (football is classic, but there’s also soccer, cross country, lacrosse, etc.)
- Host a pie bake-off
- Attend a fair, rodeo, and/or harvest festival
- Host a chili competition
- Break out those cowboy boots and try line dancing
- Invite friends over for a bonfire (extra points for roasting potatoes and corn in the coals and marshmallow sandwiches)
For experiencing the food:
- Bake an apple pie from scratch after going apple picking
- Visit the local farmers market and try seasonal produce (be adventurous!)
- Make homemade applesauce (Instant Pot and crock pot recipes abound)
- Make your own Pumpkin Spice Latte!
- Make homemade pumpkin bread
- One of my personal favorite fall recipes is a butternut squash, sausage, and feta bake!
The cicadas are singing their songs of late summer, and autumn is right around the corner. We hope this list inspires you to enjoy the change of season. And perhaps, you may even feel inspired to go on a road trip to Boston in the fall!
