Overview

Course Description

Algebra 1 challenges students to think critically and apply their math skills to the world around them. Students learn to view the letters in equations as stand ins for “real life” data. When arranged in an equation, students realize that these letters can help predict future events—i.e., the rise and fall of gas prices, growth rates of bacterial cultures, and average rainfall throughout the year. This course unpacks terms such as “rates of change” and “constant variation,” and demonstrates how to apply them to the variables in question. Students also learn how studying mathematics allows them to better understand their faith and God’s creation.

Prerequisites

Students should have a working knowledge of arithmetic, fractions, algebraic properties, one-step equations, and the ordering of integers, rational, and irrational numbers.

Students Will Learn

  • How to solve single variable equations and inequalities in multiple steps
  • How to discuss and analyze key component of linear relationships and equations such as slope, rates of change, and intercepts
  • How to write, graph, and solve linear equations in standard form, slope intercept form, and point slope form
  • How to solve systems of linear equations and inequalities
  • How to simplify expressions using laws of exponents
  • How to discuss and analyze key components of quadratic relationships and equations such as zeros, roots, solutions, and the vertex
  • How to solve quadratic equations using a variety of methods such as completing the square, factoring, and the quadratic formula
  • How to discuss measures of central tendency and standard deviation

Algebra 1 is a yearlong course. Registration opens in late February.

What to Expect Weekly

We estimate that the course workload will take 5-7 hours per week. During a typical week in this course, students will complete the following coursework:

  • 90 minutes of live class instruction
  • 3 recorded lectures
  • 15-25 homework problems per lecture
  • Additional assignments/quizzes

Throughout the year, students complete a unit test every 2-4 weeks as well as an exam at the end of each semester.

Graphing Calculator: TI-84 or equivalent (required)

A graphing calculator is required for this course. Students will use it as a supplemental tool to study the effects of slope, intercepts, exponents, and leading coefficients on graphs.

Students planning on taking Calculus or higher level math courses will be better prepared for those future courses by choosing a handheld calculator such as the TI-84. Otherwise, free, online “emulator” calculators such as https://wabbit.codeplex.com/ are acceptable, if the student will have reliable Internet access while doing math work.
