Pre-Algebra

This course serves as a bridge between arithmetic and algebra. Students explore the skills and concepts necessary for basic algebraic methods, which provides a solid foundation for Algebra 1 and subsequent high school math courses.

Overview

Course Description

Algebra is abstract by nature, and students often find it challenging to comprehend. Pre-Algebra addresses this issue by building on students’ existing knowledge of arithmetic, which is more concrete and has more real-world application than algebra. Pre-Algebra demonstrates that these two mathematical disciplines are closely related. Students are also shown how to make connections between algebra and the world God created, which brings relevancy to otherwise unfeeling and esoteric ideas and practices. Pre-Algebra students do not utilize calculators for their reasoning and computations; this is done to ensure students develop a strong understanding of the concepts presented.

Prerequisites

Students should fully understand elementary arithmetic operations and their application to the real number system. Students should also have introductory knowledge of absolute value, square roots and basic exponents, place value, properties of equality, and simple equations.

Students Will Learn

How to explain, classify, and perform basic operations on the set of real numbers without the use of a calculator
How to solve simple one-variable equations
How to solve, check, and graph basic linear equations and inequalities
How to translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions, equations, and/or inequalities.
How to use various problem-solving strategies to solve real-life applications
How to use ratios, proportions, and percents to solve problems
How to use and apply properties and formulas to solve geometric problems

Pre-Algebra is a yearlong course. Registration opens in late February.

What to Expect Weekly

We estimate that the course workload will take 5-7 hours per week. During a typical week in this course, students will complete the following coursework:

90 minutes of live class instruction
3 recorded lectures
15-25 homework problems per lecture
Additional assignments/quizzes

Throughout the year, students complete a unit test every 2-4 weeks as well as an exam at the end of each semester.
