German 2

German 2 teaches students intermediate language skills and explores additional aspects of German culture. Students refine and develop speaking, reading, and writing in German. This course is NCAA-approved.

Overview

Course Description

German 2 builds on the foundation laid in German 1 with a similar pedagogical model. Students grow their German vocabulary, and portions of the live classes are dedicated to conversational practice. Speaking topics include a variety of common terms and situations, including farm animals, vacations, the weather, and hobbies. Language games and ERF Christian German radio/tv continue to be used for content review and student engagement. Students learn increasingly complex German grammar and sentence formulation, which allows them to expand their conversational depth.

Prerequisites

Students should have completed German 1 or an equivalent course, and should be able to read and write at the 10th grade level.

Students Will Learn

How to understand future tense, simple past tense (narrative past), and past perfect tense

How to recognize, understand, and construct sentences using nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive cases

How to recognize, understand, and utilize reflexive verbs

How to master the past tense of modal auxiliaries

How to properly construct sentences using adjectives preceded by adjectives.

How to understand and utilize coordinating and subordinating conjunctions

Live Class Sections

Don't worry if none of the live times work for you! You can still register for a section and watch the recordings of the live classes at your convenience.

German 2 is a yearlong course. Registration opens in late February.

What to Expect Weekly

We estimate that the course workload will take 5-7 hours per week. During a typical week in this course, students will complete the following coursework:

90 minutes of live class instruction
Workbook assignment
Vocabulary study
30 minutes of German radio/tv
1–2 quizzes

Throughout the year, students complete six written exams and one oral exam per semester.
