German 1

This course introduces students to German language and culture. Students develop basic skills in speaking, reading, and writing German. Students who successfully complete German 1 are well-prepared for German 2. This course is NCAA-approved.

Overview

Course Description

German 1 covers grammar, vocabulary, conjugations, cases, and other fundamental concepts that are necessary for building a better understanding of the German language. Students learn common German terms and phrases, covering the seasons, activities, family life, sports, eating out, and school subjects. Live classes are conducted in both English and German. Periodic language games keep students engaged while reinforcing the course content. Students study German history and traditions to help them contextualize and appreciate German culture. They also listen to ERF Christian German Radio/TV weekly, which immerses them in the language and shows them how to worship God in German.

Prerequisites

No previous German or foreign language experience is necessary. As a prerequisite to this course, students should have a solid understanding of English grammar. Students should also be able to read and write at the 9th grade level.

Students Will Learn

How to use proper German grammar, including definite and indefinite articles, regular and irregular verb conjugations, and negation with nicht and kein

How to use both the present and present perfect tenses

How to recognize and utilize nominative, accusative, and dative cases

How to understand and utilize modal auxiliaries

How to conjugate verbs with stem vowel change

How and when to use formal and informal forms of “you”

How to understand and utilize possessive adjectives in nominative and accusative cases

How to express time in German

Live Class Sections

Only open sections are posted below. Sign up for one of the available class sections. All sections cover the same material, so pick the time that best fits your schedule. Don't worry if none of the live times work for you! You can still register for a section and watch the recordings of the live classes at your convenience.

German 1 is a yearlong course. Registration opens in late February.

What to Expect Weekly

We estimate that the course workload will take 5–7 hours per week. During a typical week in this course, students will complete the following coursework:

90 minutes of live class instruction
Workbook assignment
Vocabulary study
30 minutes of listening to German radio/tv
1–2 quizzes

Throughout the year, students complete an exam every 2-3 weeks and one oral exam each semester.
