Graphic & Web Design

This course introduces students to front-end web development. Students learn to code a website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and design graphics using image editing software.

Overview

Course Description

Graphic & Web Design is separated into two distinct topics. The first 10 weeks focus on what is required to plan, create, produce, and maintain a website. Students learn to use web design tools such as Bootstrap and Zurb Foundation. The final six weeks shift to graphic design. Students become familiar with important design concepts and tools, which help them create logos, brochures, and professional website mockups. As their final project, students use their new skills to code and design an entire website from scratch.

Prerequisites

Students perform best if they complete Computer Science before taking Graphic & Web Design. Students must also have a laptop or desktop with a Windows, MacOS, or Linux operating system.

How to build a webpage in HTML from scratch

How to add customizations to a webpage with CSS

How to add behavior to a webpage using Javascript

How to apply design foundations to websites and digital art

How to navigate and distinguish between types of design software

How to prototype and wireframe websites

How to design artwork for multiple purposes

Graphic & Web Design is a semester-long course. Registration for the Fall term opens in late February.

What to Expect Weekly

We estimate that course workload will take 5-7 hours per week. During a typical week, students complete the following coursework:

Students complete a midterm exam, a final project, weekly quizzes, and various homework assignments.
