Overview

Course Description

Computer Science is broken into two parts. In the first half, students become acquainted with most Python data types and develop the knowledge needed for intermediate Python coding. Topics include variables, conditional statements, functions, and more. Students will then apply their new knowledge through two main projects: a video game (similar to space invaders), and an online prayer journal.

Prerequisites

Students should be comfortable with code editors, folder structures, and path structures.

What to Expect Weekly

We estimate that course workload will take 5-7 hours per week. During a typical week, students complete the following coursework:

  • 90 minutes of live class instruction
  • Recorded lecture
  • Class discussion post
  • Application assignment
  • Worksheet
  • Quiz

Students complete weekly quizzes, three final projects, and various homework assignments.

Books & materials are finalized before registration opens. In rare situations, however, they may change due to external circumstances.

Operating system must be either Windows 10/11 OR MacOS BigSur (or higher) OR Ubuntu Linux x

A desktop or laptop computer is mandatory for this course.

The programing assignments for this course cannot be completed on a cell phone or tablet computer (iPad, etc.).

A desktop or laptop computer with the following specifications is needed:

  • Minimum of 8 GB of RAM.
  • Processor: intel i5 or higher (i3 can still work, but it will work slower), Apple M1 or higher.
  • Space on your hard drive: 1GB minimum. It is assumed that your hard drive is large enough for your operating system and all your currently installed applications/programs, including Python and VS Code. 

Please Note: Intel Macs can still be used, but Apple support is beginning to be phased out and very soon installations of VS Code, Pycharm, and even Python will not be supported by Apple.
