Overview
Course Description
Pre-Calculus & Trigonometry students build upon skills learned in Algebra 2 and Geometry. Students learn about a function’s different properties and how to manipulate them in a variety of algebraic and graphical ways. Students see these mathematical principles applied in sports, music, and card games, giving them practical examples to work from as they investigate abstract concepts. Students also discover how math works in the natural world, discovering the purposeful reality written into our universe by God. Classes encourage collaborative learning; during each live class, students have opportunities to work together and earn virtual prizes. Pre-Calculus & Trigonometry is approved for dual credit at Colorado Christian University.
Prerequisites
Students should complete Geometry and Algebra 2 before taking Pre-Calculus & Trigonometry. For help determining if your student is ready for this course, please use our self-graded Pre-Calculus & Trigonometry Readiness Test.
Dual Credit
This course has been approved for dual credit at Colorado Christian University. Our Pre-Calculus & Trigonometry course has been approved for equivalency with MAT 115 (Pre-Calculus) with certain instructors.

Students Will Learn
- How to understand trigonometric functions, applications, identities, expressions, and equations
- How to understand and solve linear, nonlinear, and multi-variable systems of equations and inequalities both mathematically and graphically.
- How to understand and use matrices, matrix operations, their inverses and determinants to solve systems of equations.
- How to understand and use vectors, dot products, complex numbers and polar coordinates to solve problems.
- How to understand and use arithmetic and geometric sequences, their sums, the binomial theorem, counting principles, permutations, combinations, and probability to solve common problems.
Live Class Sections
Pre-Calculus & Trigonometry is a yearlong course. Registration opens in late February.
What to Expect Weekly
We estimate that the course workload will take 5-7 hours per week. During a typical week, students will complete the following coursework:
- 90 minutes of live class instruction
- 3-4 lecture videos
- 15-20 homework problems per lecture (self-graded)
- 1 quiz
- Textbook reading
Throughout the year, students complete a test every 4 weeks as well as an exam at the end of each semester.

- Be sure you purchase this specific edition. The publisher sells several editions of this textbook, and different used copies are available from individual sellers online. This course is tied to the Ninth Edition only.
Graphing Calculator: TI-84 or equivalent (required)

Acceptable equivalent options must be capable of trigonometric (radian, degree modes), exponential (base, exponent), and logarithmic (log, 1n) numerical calculations such as found on common device or online “scientific” calculators and low-cost “scientific” calculators (Casio, etc.), and graphing polynomials including trigonometric functions such as found at www.desmos.com.
Why We Chose This
- Students planning on taking Calculus or higher level math courses will be better prepared for those future courses by choosing a handheld calculator such as the TI-84. Otherwise, free, online “emulator” calculators such as https://wabbit.codeplex.com/ are acceptable, if the student will have reliable Internet access while doing math work.
