Teacher Feature, Mrs. Cherise Curby, English

Welcome to the “Teacher Feature”! In this series, we ask Academy instructors the same five, fun questions so that you can get to know them better. Today, we are excited to highlight English instructor, Cherise Curby.

Cherise lives in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains with her family. She studied journalism at Patrick Henry College and afterward fell in love with teaching. Cherise currently teaches Foundations in Writing, and is also the Master Teacher for the course.

And with that, let’s move on to the interview.

HSLDA Online Academy: What’s a typical Saturday night like for you?

Cherise Curby: In the summer, it is often on a local hiking trail or lazing by the Shenandoah River with my kids and kayaks. Once it’s cold, Saturdays are movie nights with friends or reading books together as a family.

HSLDA Online Academy: What are your must-have smartphone apps?

Cherise Curby: I like the photos app because I love taking pictures when adventuring with my kids, and then gathering the best ones for our yearly photo album. I also use messaging apps all the time to plan things with my friends and family.

HSLDA Online Academy: What can you cook to perfection? Are you willing to share the recipe?

Cherise Curby: My go-to is either chili and cornbread or a pesto pasta salad. I don’t have a real recipe for those, though, I just know how to make it. One of my favorite recipes that I actually use a recipe for is a Mediterranean one-pan dish. I add different veggies to it every time, but here’s the recipe that I base it off: https://thecafesucrefarine.com/mediterranean-sheet-pan-chicken-dinner/

HSLDA Online Academy: If you won the lottery and decided to give up teaching, what would you do instead?

Cherise Curby: Oh, I would travel! I’d invest in some kind of a business that takes only a little of my time to manage, and then start planning trips! I wouldn’t want to leave our community, but we would be traveling a lot throughout the year. I would also take up rock climbing.

HSLDA Online Academy: If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

Cherise Curby: God doesn’t waste time. Even if you feel like you aren’t progressing, or you don’t have a plan, or you don’t like the plan, God is constantly using the good and bad in your life to work on your heart and mold you.
