How much homework is in English Language & Composition?
AP® English Language & Composition is a rigorous, college-level course. We estimate that the course workload will take 10+ hours per week.
During a typical week in this course, students will complete the following coursework:
- 60–90 minutes of live class instruction
- 5–10 minutes of video or audio lecture
- 1–2 short writing assignments, which may include half-page or one-page essays, paragraph rewrites, timed essay writing (for AP® exam practice), essay analysis quizzes, or discussion forum posts
- ~30–40 pages of textbook reading for grammar and writing techniques
- ~10 pages of non-fiction selections for reading comprehension and analysis assignments
- 1 vocabulary quiz
Throughout the year, students will also complete the following tasks:
- 1 midterm exam
- 1 final exam
- One research paper (8–10 pages). As part of this assignment, students will complete thesis writing exercises, outlining assignments, rough drafts, and peer review of drafts.
