What topics will I learn about in Latin 2?

In Latin 2 students will build on the initial Latin skills that they developed in Latin 1.  Students will continue their introduction to the Latin language as well as the historical context of Ancient Rome. Students will develop the ability to translate, read, and compose Latin. 

During this course, students will learn to:

  • Translate passages from Latin to English and English to Latin at a beginning level.
  • Understand the cultural, social, religious, political, and economic environment in which classical Latin was spoken, written, and read.
  • Understand how this legacy impacts western civilization and America today.
  • Identify the Latin roots of many English words.
  • Memorize vocabulary words.
  • Conjugate verbs and decline nouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
  • Utilize grammar and syntax to improve their writing.

In Latin 2, students will study chapters 20–40 of Wheelock's Latin. In these chapters, they will learn topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Noun Declensions: Fifth Declension
  • Verb Conjugations: Third (Passive) and Fourth (Passive)
  • Verb Tenses: all tenses, in the subjunctive and passive forms
  • Verb Moods: Subjunctive
  • Verb Tenses: Active and Passive
  • Deponent Verbs (verbs with a passive form but active meaning)
  • Special clauses
  • Gerunds (verbal nouns) and gerundives (verbal adjectives)
