Dale Carnegie's Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success

Description: Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success teaches students life skills needed to flourish as adults. Students will develop their leadership skills as they learn how to effectively communicate and increase their self-confidence while simultaneously recognizing the efforts of others. They develop skills to collaborate and connect with others, learn to be flexible when needed, communicate their ideas effectively, and become well-versed in the art of disagreement. This course is approved by the American Council on Education for two college credits toward communications/speech. Acceptance is dependent on individual colleges and universities.

  • How much homework is in Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success?

    We estimate that the course workload will take 3-–4 hours per week. During a typical week, students complete the following coursework: 

    • 90 minutes of live class instruction 
    • About 2 hours of session work before the live class 
    • Application of material learned in class in daily life situations 

    Throughout the semester, students complete homework activities to reinforce the lessons learned during the live class sessions. Due to the highly interactive nature of the live sessions, students are required to have their webcams and microphones on during class. 

  • What books will I use in Communications & Interpersonal Skills for Success?

    At the beginning of the course, students will receive access to the course materials and an in-depth PDF containing all necessary reading materials. Unlike other HSLDA Online Academy courses, no additional books are necessary.

    Students will need access to a stable internet connection to be able to stream audio and video as well as share their own audio and video. Students are required to have their video cameras on for all live class sessions. 

  • How can I earn college credit for Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success?

    Students who successfully complete Communications & Interpersonal Skills for Success will receive a Final Grade Report after the course ends and may be able to earn college credit by talking directly to colleges and universities they are interested in.

    Students who plan to complete the course for college credit are expected to attend a minimum of 12 of the 16 live class sessions at the regularly scheduled time. Communications & Interpersonal Skills for Success is approved by the American Council on Education and can be approved for a two college credit communications/speech class. 

    If your preferred college/university won't accept Communication Skills for Success for college credit, many admissions counselors favorably view this course on student transcripts because it shows that the student is trying to improve their interpersonal relationship skills. 

  • Prerequisites

    Students should be able to read and write at a 9th grade level. We recommend that students seeking college credit for the course wait until 11th or 12th grade. 

  • What is a Live Online Class Session in Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success?

    In every HSLDA Online Academy course, students meet weekly with their instructor and classmates in an online classroom for additional teaching, discussion, Q&A, or group activities. The class sessions are interactive and are conducted using a web meeting software with video, audio, chat, and application sharing capabilities.

    Scheduled, real-time sessions in the online classroom are not the only form of instruction available in a HSLDA Online Academy course, but are offered in addition to lectures or other instructional materials that students are able to access online at their convenience. Attendance at live class sessions for Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success is strongly encouraged.

    When they register, students will need to select a particular class section and live class meeting time. Additional class sections may be added to the schedule at a later point in the course registration period. Registered students will be notified of any changes to the live session schedule.

  • What if I have a schedule conflict with Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success?

    While all live class sessions are recorded for later viewing, attendance for Communication & Interpersonal Skills for Success is required unlike other HSLDA Online Academy courses.

    If a student is unable to attend a live class session during the semester, they should contact the instructor to arrange for make-up work. It is not recommened to miss more than two live class sessions for this course.

  • Can adults take Communications & Interpersonal Skills for Success?

    Because HSLDA Online Academy serves high school students who are minors, registration for this course is limited to high school students who are younger than 20 years old.
